Thousands of positions go unadvertised.

Many companies believe that it is unwise to reveal their staffing weaknesses in the newspapers or job boards. By doing so it provides (their) competitors, not to mention the public in general, business intelligence they should not be aware of.

This is why "The Hidden Job Market" you likely have heard of at some point in time is not a myth. It does exist.

Is your e-mail being "legally " opened by someone else ?

Real Time NetWork receives hundreds of resumes each week.  Often times an employed candidate references a work related e-mail address such as:  wsmith@abcinc.com

If you are employed, this can be a serious error in judgment. When you use an employers e-mail account, or their computers at all for that matter, you have no rights to privacy.

Employees have been known to file law suits on this very issue against their company. The courts have been ruling that when an individual utilizes company resources for personal use, the information is company property.

Many organizations use software such as Cybersnoop, Web Spy or Infiltrator to monitor all of it's employees computer activities. It is just one more way your boss or HR department can legally keep an eye on you.

In a study completed in early 2004 by Forrester Research, over 43% of the large corporations are monitoring employee e-mail. This number is expected to rise.

You can circumvent this Big Brother tactic!

Never use electronic company owned resources for personal correspondence of any type. That includes retrieving personal e-mail via a personal account at Hotmail, Mindspring, MSN or any others for that matter.

Finally, be cognizant of using company laptops that may be in your possession. Information residing in hidden files on the the laptop can give you away !

You may think you deleted information but "hidden files" are a reality and are not always wiped out by pressing the Delete button.

We know of one company that actually intercepts all incoming / outgoing e-mails of their employees; be they personal or business, be it a desktop or laptop computer. To date, this particular company has never informed it's employees of this questionable tactic.

Here is what happens...employees at this particular organization using company computers for e-mail are unaware that all of their correspondence is also automatically being routed to a computer in the office an executive within that company !!!

Inexpensive software is available to you such as History Kill and others. This type of software will eliminate those hidden files, but it is usually against company policy to install these type of tools on company owned computers. If it is prohibited and you install it, you'll likely get caught. If it is not prohibited and you install it, your boss might be asking why it is there.

It's a no win situation. You might be employed for Big Brother, he may be watching and he can get away with it. Simply watch your use of company owned computers.

One closing thought....

Many people publish their resume on a personal Home Page. If you have done this a savvy recruiter, your company, or a person with no need to know, may find you merely by typing in a simple or more complex Boolean string within a search engine such as Google, All The Web, Visvismo, Alta Vista and numerous search engines.

You could also be found on a ListServ or a Users Group within Yahoo or another such place.

If these methods do not work, there are those Spiders mentioned earlier or possibly deployment of another tool known as a Bot. Just one more piece of software you have learned about. Due to aggressive marketing by the authors of this software and the inexpensive price, their use is on the upswing by companies and predators alike.

If you placed your credentials or personal information on a Home Page several years ago, chances are you can still be discovered...even on an expired web page !

Here again is an example of where technology "could" benefit you. Then to....this same technology can put your personal information in the wrong hands.

This all may sound complicated in some respects, but in reality it is not. You can be found.

Is it worth the potential risks to expose yourself ?
